For Students
Eligibility
To be eligible for academic accommodations at Western New Mexico University, you must have a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and be enrolled in one or more hours of study in WNMU courses. The Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act provide for equal opportunity for persons with disabilities. To be protected under the ADA, you must be determined to:
- Have a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activities; or
- Have a record of such an impairment; or
- Be regarded as having such an impairment.
If a disability exists, reasonable appropriate accommodations are determined in order to create equal opportunity.
How to Request Accommodations
Every request for accommodation is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Not all requests are approved, and modifications, changes, or denials may occur depending on circumstances. To have reasonable accommodations reviewed for approval, take part in the interactive process with the Student Accessibility Office (SAO) using the four steps below.
Step 1: Submit the Petition for Services
Complete the Petition for Services form further down this page. You are encouraged to register for services as soon as possible.
Step 2: Meet with the SAO
As soon as your petition reaches our office, we will contact you to schedule a New Student Intake appointment. At that appointment:
- An SAO representative will have an interactive conversation with you about the barriers to your education that you currently experience, and together you will determine what reasonable accommodations, if any, should be put in place.
- You will be asked to gather the medical documentation needed to continue with services.
- You will need to provide a copy of your current course schedule, including each course name, course number, and instructor’s full name.
Step 3: Receive your Accommodation Letter
If accommodations are approved at your meeting, you will receive an Accommodation Letter listing the exact accommodations you are approved for. This letter is generally available within two to three business days.
Give a copy of your Accommodation Letter to each person who facilitates your accommodations — for example, each of your instructors. You are responsible for discussing your approved accommodations with them.
Step 4: Renew each semester
An Accommodation Letter must be renewed every semester before the accommodations are valid in that semester’s courses. To renew, email, call, or visit the SAO with your new course schedule and request your letters. Renewed letters are generally available within two to three business days.
- You will meet with the SAO once a year so we can keep your profile up to date.
- You will not be asked for a new doctor’s note at renewal, though the SAO may request one if your circumstances change.
Request Early — Accommodations Are Not Retroactive
There is no deadline for requesting accommodations during a semester, but we strongly recommend submitting your request within the first two weeks of the semester, because accommodations cannot be applied retroactively.
WNMU and the Student Accessibility Office expect you to stay in contact with our office and to remain actively involved in the accommodation process throughout the semester. Bring any question or concern about your accommodations to the SAO as soon as it arises, and make an additional appointment if you need one.
Petition for Services
Submitting this form begins the accommodation process. All fields are required. If you would rather petition another way, or you need this form in an alternative format, contact the Student Accessibility Office at (575) 538-6277 or accessibility@wnmu.edu.
